My motif for this exhibition is an exploration of how to express objects as seen through the medium of ice. However, the focus of these works is not on the ice itself; my aim was to paint the world that is found inside objects with front and back surfaces.

In 2022, I was blessed with the opportunity to photograph glassware created by Gallé and the Daum brothers. This inspired me to make paintings that examined light through the motif of glassware. Specifically, I painted three types of light—light that expresses the radiance of the glass surface, light that passes through the glass from the inside, and light that enables us to distinguish objects. I did this because I felt that the unique properties of glass could be adeptly harnessed to express light. As I painted, however, I was gnawed at by this feeling that I wasn’t fully engaging with the glass itself. It was a sense that I was painting the phenomena occurring on the surface of the glass.

I had made glass my motif, but there was something I wasn’t seeing in it, namely the intermediate realm that exists within objects with front and back surfaces but is hidden from view by light. This realization drove me to seek out a means of painting that realm. I eventually came upon a way of using ice as a motif, after a long process of experimenting with different methods of making ice.

To me, the space trapped within ice is a vast cosmos. The countless bubbles that form when water freezes is an explosion of air that gives a white cast to the transparent space. I am attempting to figure out where to put the focus to bring that cosmos to the canvas, and through this challenge I hope to find a clue that provides a path to painting.
